Phonics Flash Cards - Learn to Read in 20 Stages (60 cards, 480 Words)

Phonics flash cards give children a structured, screen-free way to practise early reading through sounds, words and short sentences. The 20-stage progression allows parents to introduce new reading challenges gradually and revisit earlier stages whenever a child needs more practice.

What Makes These Flash Cards Useful?

The strength of the set is its progression. Instead of presenting children with unrelated words, the cards are designed to move from simpler reading practice towards more developed word and sentence recognition.

• Build phonics awareness step by step: Children can practise connecting letters and sounds before moving into more advanced reading activities.
• Progress at the child's pace: Parents can spend more time on a stage that feels challenging and move forward when the child is comfortable.
• Practise word recognition: Repeated exposure to words gives children opportunities to recognise familiar patterns rather than relying only on guessing.
• Move towards sentence reading: The progression extends beyond individual words, giving children opportunities to apply what they have practised in short reading contexts.
• Keep reading practice hands-on: Physical cards make it easy for parents to point, repeat, ask questions and practise specific sounds without relying on a screen.

Ways Children Can Use Them

The cards work best as a short, interactive reading activity rather than something children have to complete all at once.

• Start with a few cards: Introduce a small number of cards at a time and let your child become comfortable with the sounds and words before adding more.
• Say, point and read: Say the sound or word together, point to the letters and then encourage your child to try reading it independently.
• Repeat tricky words: Keep difficult words in the practice pile and revisit them later instead of rushing through the stage.
• Turn practice into a game: Ask your child to find a particular sound or word, match cards or read a card before moving to the next one.
• Celebrate small steps: Move through the stages gradually and recognise progress when your child begins reading a word or sentence with less help.
