Wooden Montessori Tray | Sand Writing & Sensory Learning Toy

The NESTA TOYS Wooden Montessori Sand Writing Tray is a hands-on learning tool designed for children 3 years and above to explore pre-writing, sensory play and early learning. Made from high-quality beech wood, the 25 cm × 25 cm tray provides a dedicated space where children can trace letters, numbers, shapes, lines and patterns using sand or other suitable sensory materials.

Its simple, open-ended design allows the same tray to be used for different activities as children progress from basic mark-making to more intentional pre-writing practice. It can also be used with materials such as rice, salt or lentils, giving children different textures to explore while learning.

Why Children Enjoy Sand Writing & Sensory Play

Learning through touch gives children a different way to explore early writing and mark-making. The reusable tray allows them to practise, erase and try again without the pressure of getting every mark right the first time.

• Encourages pre-writing practice: Children can make lines, curves, patterns, shapes, letters and numbers using their fingers or a suitable writing tool.
• Builds fine motor control: Drawing and tracing movements encourage children to practise controlled finger and hand movements.
• Makes writing tactile: Feeling the texture of sand, rice or other materials adds a sensory element to early writing activities.
• Encourages repetition: Children can smooth the surface and repeat an activity several times as they become more comfortable with different movements.
• Supports concentration: Simple tracing and sensory activities can encourage children to focus on one activity at a time.
• Encourages independent learning: Children can choose what they want to draw, trace or explore and work at their own pace.
• Screen-free learning: The tray provides a hands-on alternative to digital writing and drawing activities.

Ways Kids Can Explore the Montessori Sand Tray

The tray can be introduced gradually, beginning with simple sensory exploration and moving towards more structured pre-writing activities.

• Draw simple lines: Start with horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines before introducing more complex patterns.
• Trace shapes: Draw a circle, square, triangle or other simple shape and encourage your child to trace it in the sensory material.
• Practise letters: Write a large letter on a card or demonstrate it beside the tray, then let your child recreate it in the sand.
• Trace numbers: Introduce numbers one at a time and encourage children to practise their formation.
• Create patterns: Make simple zigzags, waves, loops and repeated patterns for children to copy.
• Try different textures: Use sand, rice, salt or lentils to give children different sensory experiences.
• Free drawing: Let children create their own marks, pictures and designs without following a specific pattern.
• Erase and repeat: Smooth the surface after each activity and encourage children to try again.
