Pre-writing Readiness Kit for Kids (2+ Years)

The NESTA TOYS Pre-Writing Readiness Kit is a hands-on learning set designed for children 2 years and above to explore the foundational skills needed before formal writing begins. Inspired by Montessori learning principles, the kit combines scooping, pouring, pressing, tracing and sensory activities to help children practise controlled hand movements while keeping learning playful and engaging.

The kit includes a sensory Montessori tray, double-sided slate with chalk, wooden rolling pin, patterned wooden rolling pin, wooden knife, and wooden scoop and cup set. Made from high-quality beech wood with smooth, rounded edges and non-toxic, child-safe colours, the different tools offer children varied ways to explore fine motor activities, sensory play and practical-life skills.

Why Children Enjoy the Pre-Writing Readiness Kit

Pre-writing development begins with simple movements such as grasping, pressing, scooping and making controlled marks. This kit brings several of these activities together so children can practise through playful, hands-on exploration.

• Builds pre-writing readiness: Activities such as tracing and making marks on the slate encourage controlled hand movements needed for future writing.
• Strengthens fine motor skills: Scooping, pouring, rolling and transferring materials give children opportunities to practise finger, hand and wrist movements.
• Develops pencil-grip readiness: Handling the different tools encourages children to practise controlled grips before they begin using pencils regularly.
• Encourages sensory exploration: The Montessori tray can be used with materials such as play dough, rice, lentils or sand for different tactile experiences.
• Supports concentration: Repeatable activities encourage children to focus on a task and complete simple actions independently.
• Encourages creativity: The rolling pins, sensory materials and slate can be used for open-ended drawing, pattern-making and pretend play.
• Introduces practical-life skills: Scooping, pouring, transferring and using simple tools allow children to explore everyday actions through play.

Ways Kids Can Explore the Pre-Writing Kit

The different tools can be used individually or together for simple activities that prepare children for early writing and learning.

• Practise pre-writing strokes: Use the double-sided slate and chalk to practise straight lines, curves, circles, zigzags and simple patterns.
• Scoop and transfer: Fill the sensory tray with a suitable dry material and let children scoop it into the cup and transfer it back.
• Pour between containers: Encourage children to carefully pour materials from the cup and practise controlled movements.
• Roll and press: Use the regular rolling pin with play dough or another suitable sensory material to practise pushing and rolling movements.
• Create textured patterns: Roll the patterned rolling pin over play dough or sand to create different designs and discover cause and effect.
• Cut play dough: Use the wooden knife with soft play dough for pretend cooking and controlled cutting movements.
• Create sensory activities: Change the material in the tray to introduce new textures and keep familiar activities interesting.
• Combine learning and pretend play: Use the tools for pretend baking, cooking or other practical-life scenarios while practising scooping, rolling and transferring.
